As we open chapter 5 this week Paul begins to get personal with the Corinthians. There has been a build up to this. He has reminded them who they are; those sanctified in Christ, His called ones. He has proclaimed to them the truth that he brought them, that is Christ and Him crucified, he has questioned the divisions within the church, when they are all Christ's, He has reminded them of who he is, a servant and steward of God, their father in the faith, and they are his beloved children. All of this was for their benefit, he wants them to understand his motive and his heart. Now he challenges them on the fact that immorality is in the church and they are sitting by either ignoring it or justifying it, instead of confronting the wayward brother, and removing him from among them. There is a call for discipline. We will look at four factors to discipline in this passage for us to understand and apply to our own lives. I Corinthians 5:1-13

This week we will build upon last week's discussion of God's teachers in the Corinthian community as we follow Paul's chastisement of the Corinthian church. The Corinthian church seemed to consider themselves lowly in the eyes of the world and feared persecution. We will examine how Paul deals with the fears of the Corinthians as he compares the position held by the apostles to that of the Corinthian Christians. I Corinthians 4:6-13

1 Corinthians 4:1-5 focuses on the true nature and marks of God's minister. Paul wants to establish some basic guidelines and standards by which we evaluate those who preach and teach. He deals with the congregation's attitudes, the Corinthians are putting one minister above another; which is causing division and is destroying God's church. We will also look at how ministers are to evaluate themselves. Three points this week: 1. The Identity of a minister 2. The Requirements of a minister 3. From considering the external construction of God’s church, Paul now interrogates the contents of the believers. Sin and pride can deceive us into propping ourselves as the arbiters of wisdom. However, God’s omniscience permeates our own facades and conjectures to reveal the fallibility of the human wisdom that we want to boast in. Sin and pride also cheat us out of the wisdom that God would give to us through His means. I Corinthians 3:16-23
